Criticism of the term
[edit]Why the heck is there nothing about the fact that it's controversial and often used for shitty gatekeeping? This reads like an extended dictionary definition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.191.128.177 (talk) 14:04, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- Apologies for missing this at the time, but I'm not really sure what the suggested change is. The first paragraph of the lead ends:
When used sincerely, the terms have been criticised as exclusionary towards bisexuality and other experiences of gender and sexuality, and as stigmatising survivors of sexual violence.
If this, and the criticism of the term seen throughout the article, is not sufficient for showing that many view it as "controversial and often used for shitty gatekeeping" then can you suggest what sources and prose would improve this? — Bilorv (talk) 17:41, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Gold star (slang) → Gold star (LGBT slang) – I think that we should specify this is LGBT slang. Collins gives other informal definitions:
- a. symbolic approval or recognition for outstanding merit or effort
- You get the gold star for cooking such a gourmet dinner
- b. anything that represents an outstanding effort or achievement
- Her promotion was the gold star she'd been working for
Although it does not describe these as slang, I think specifying the LGBT context is necessary here to avoid confusion with these other informal uses of the term. QueenofBithynia (talk) 13:03, 10 August 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 15:14, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- From WP:TITLEDAB:
... when a more detailed title is necessary to distinguish an article topic from another, use only as much additional detail as necessary. For example, it would be redundant to title an article "Queen (rock band)", as Queen (band) is precise enough to distinguish the rock band from other uses of the term "Queen".
We have no other article about the use of gold star as slang, nor coverage within another article that I could find. I'm not sure how we feel about cross-wiki hatnote links, but we could perhaps use{{For|other uses of the term as slang|wiktionary:gold star}}
to link to wiktionary:gold star. — Bilorv (talk) 16:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- That sounds good too! I'd definitely support the hatnote as an alternative to a page move. – QueenofBithynia (talk) 16:57, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. The recommended disambiguation is unnecessary as a hatnote, which was already recommended above, would cover this issue. Aoba47 (talk) 21:44, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support the longer dab is actually helpful. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:41, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

- Support - it's not just any old slang, it's LGBT slang. As a specific term, I think that's useful here. — Amakuru (talk) 16:10, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support - This is clearly LGBT slang, not just any slang. As such, I fully agree with Amakuru and In ictu oculi, while disagreeing completely with Aoba47. A new name would clear up any confusion. But, I also think the hatnote would be acceptable.Historyday01 (talk) 16:51, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support - I suspect that most readers seeing the title "Gold star (slang)" will probably assume that the title refers to one of the other informal definitions listed by the nom, rather than to the LGBT term specifically. Consequently, I feel the longer disambiguation will be less WP:ASTONISHing. A hatnote would also be an acceptable alternative to the move.
